Our Alabama Class AB Underground Storage Tank (PST) Operator Training Course is approved by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). The course covers responsibilities of both the Albama Class A UST Operator and Class B UST Operator. The topics include UST operator classifications, UST systems, UST operation, UST release detection, financial responsibility and investigation, and reporting of suspected and confirmed releases from USTs. The training includes video-based slides from our most senior UST operator trainer. It will keep track of your progress so that you can finish it at your own pace. When you complete the course and the exam, you can download your Alabama Class A/B UST Operator Certificate. We will also email the certificate to you.

Class C Operator

Our Alabama Class C UST Operator Training Course is also accepted by ADEM. It is designed to provide the initial Class C UST training needed to know how to recognize and respond to problems, alarms, fuel delivery, suspected releases, and spills at Alabama UST facilities.  The training of the Alabama Class C UST operator is the responsibility of the Alabama Class A/B UST Operator.  Our training includes a method to create-specific UST procedures that the Class A/B UST operator can utilize to provide site-specific training to the Class C UST Operator. You will be able to download your Class C certificate of completion upon completion of the training and the exam.

Alabama UST Operator Classifications

Alabama underground storage tank facilities are regulated by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.  The Alabama rules UST and AST regulations are found in ADEM Administrative Code R. 335-6-15.  Alabama regulations requires the owner or operator of each UST facility to train at least one employee in each of the following classifications:

The Alabama Class A UST operator is typically the owner or manager of a UST facility who has general knowledge of regulations governing USTs. The Alabama Class A UST operator responsibilities include general knowledge of UST system requirements so the operator can make informed decisions regarding compliance and ensure responsible persons are performing duties to operate and maintain the UST system. Alabama Class A UST operators may be required to be retrained by the ADEM if the UST facility is found significantly out of compliance.

The Alabama Class B UST operator has responsibility for implementing the including release detection, release prevention, maintenance, operation, reporting, and record keeping at the Alabama UST facility. The Class B operator requires a more in-depth understanding of operation and maintenance aspects of the UST facility. The Class B operator has responsibility for training the Alabama Class C UST operators. Alabama Class B UST operators may be required to be retrained by the ADEM if the UST facility is found significantly out of compliance.

The Alabama Class C UST operator is the first responder to emergencies at the Alabama UST facility. At a typical convenience store, the Alabama Class C UST operator is the clerk or attendant at the gas station.  At an industrial facility, the New Mexico Class C UST operator is a facility employee that works in the vicinity of the USTs.  The Alabama Class C UST operator must understand how to recognize alarms or emergency conditions, how to respond to alarms or spills, and how to call the Class A or Class B UST operators and appropriate responders in case of an emergency or fuel spill. Class C UST Operators must be trained and certified each time they are designated for a particular UST or AST system.

Alabama USTs regulations are found at Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Water Division, Water Quality Program Volume II, Division 335-6. Alabama UST operators should be familiar with these regulations to maintain compliance.

On October 13, 2015, USEPA finalized the first significant changes to the federal UST regulations since 1988. Alabama revised UST regulations were effective December 8, 2917. The most significant revisions to the Alabama UST regulations are listed below.

  • UST system compatibility demonstration;
  • Monthly UST walkthrough inspections;
  • Annual UST walkthrough inspections;
  • Tri-Annual UST spill container and UST containment sump testing;
  • Annual UST overfill prevention equipment inspections;
  • Annual UST release detection equipment testing; and, but not limited to,
  • Emergency Generator UST System and Airport Hydrant UST Requirements.

ADEM developed a compliance manual for Alabama UST operators to maintain compliance with the Alabama UST regulations.
