Course Description

North Carolina’’s training for Underground Storage Tank (UST) Primary Operators (Class A/B Operators) is conducted at each UST facility during a regular compliance inspection. The UST inspector for the county where the facility is located will contact the UST owner to schedule that inspection. If a facility is in compliance and its Primary Operator can score 75% or better on the on-site written assessment, then a training certificate will be issued. If the Primary Operator cannot successfully complete the training or the facility is not in compliance, then retraining will be required.

This web-based course is designed to satisfy the retraining of Primary Operators in the State of North Carolina. This self-paced course allows the student to start and pause the training during its delivery. The course must be completed within 6 months of its start. The course utilizes visual aids and audio commentary to facilitate the efficient and comprehensive learning of the subject matter. As required by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR), this course covers United States federal requirements for management and operation of USTs. Specifically, this class covers Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 280, or 40 CFR Part 280. This class is not intended to cover North Carolina’s UST compliance requirements listed in 15A NCAC, Criteria and Standards Applicable to UST’s. However, it is your responsibility as a North Carolina Primary UST Operator to understand and comply with North Carolina’s regulations, in addition to the federal USEPA requirements. The training course has been approved by the State of North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Seat Time

Approximately 4 hours.

Testing

At the conclusion of the training course, a 60-question multiple-choice assessment will be administered. As soon as you begin the assessment, you will have 90 elapsed minutes to complete the test. You must obtain a passing score of 75% correctly answered questions to gain certification as a North Carolina UST Primary Operator.

Pre-Requisite

This training is a suitable method for Primary Operators to gain certification if they did not successfully pass the on-site assessment conducted by the NCDENR, if the Primary Operator was not trained during the compliance inspection, or if the NCDENR finds the facility out of compliance during a compliance inspection and retraining is required.
